Scott’s Thoughts: Halfway to Victory

“A road well begun is the battle half won. The important thing is to make a beginning and get under way.”

-Soren Kierkegaard, (1813–1855) – Danish philosopher and writer

Image of bikes at the starting lineWhat is more daunting than a blank page? What paralyzes people more than the prospect of taking the first step of a thousand mile journey? When a difficult conversation is to be had, what is more challenging than saying the first sentence?

Starting something new is actually the most formidable task most of us face. Whether it’s embarking on a new marketing plan, trying a new approach to building client relationships, or simply executing on one of the good ideas we’ve had in the past year, it seems 50% of the work is simply starting. (They say that the hardest part of getting to the gym is tying your shoes… and who could argue with that?)

Every week, I try to introduce agents and brokers to new tools to help them succeed. I don’t expect you to try all of them, but I hope that among the tips, tools, and ideas, you find at least one or two a month you’re willing to try.

I’ve heard recently from lots of agents who have been consistently “starting something.” Whether it’s an idea they found in Tuesday Tactics, or something they’ve learned from other agents, they report that while not all of their ideas have succeeded, they’ve experienced a tremendous amount of satisfaction from the feeling of getting under way.

Remember, starting something new serves many purposes:

  1. You’re energized, you have hope.
  2. Your mind begins thinking in new directions.
  3. You have a sense of purpose, you’re seeking a goal.
  4. You’re no longer just sitting there, waiting for something to change.

Just think, if you try only one a month, you’re already integrating 12 new ideas a year. So get out there and win half the battle today. Getting under way is the hard part. Cross the starting line!
