Scott’s Thoughts: Our Common Good

Red Cross Donations Needed!“Democracy is not just the right to vote, it is the right to live in dignity.”

Naomi Klein, (b. May 8, 1970), Canadian author and social activist

Unless you’ve been working in a remote rainforest for the past two years, you probably know that today is Election Day in the U.S. With billions poured into political advertising, 24/7 news media coverage, and constant speculation by pollsters and gamblers, it all comes down to today’s vote. If you haven’t already voted early, today is your one shot to pitch your rain drop into the great lake of American democracy.

Whether you’re left, right, center, or fringe, your participation today matters. I urge you to step up and perform your civic duty. Your voice does matter, and if you choose not to voice, your silence will matter, too. To find your polling place, check out Google’s Voter Information resource:

Political and social discourse has become increasingly polarized over the past eight years. The media landscape portrays much of America as entrenched in opposing ideologies, and I think we’re collectively at risk when we buy too much into this picture of ourselves. I prefer a democracy capable of spirited, civil collaboration. I think we are at our best when we do not succumb to extremes, but rather when we contribute to a common good.

So in that spirit, I’d like to appeal to everyone to come together beyond the scope of political parties. This week, in addition to casting our private opinion as to who should be given leadership in this nation, I’d like to ask everyone to come together and support those in need in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Let’s make our common good humanitarian. Let’s help those who have lost their livelihood and the solid foundation of their community. Join me, Oakley Signs & Graphics, and thousands of other Tuesday Tactics subscribers by donating what you can to the Red Cross today:
