The Closing Word: Bedraggle

The Closing Word: BedraggleThis week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.

This week’s closing word:

bedraggle

Pronounced: (bih-DRAG-uhl)

Verb:
make wet and dirty, as from rain

From Vocabulary.com: “Bedraggle is a word that was probably very common in the early 1700s when people started using it. If a lady walked along the old, unpaved streets, it would bedraggle the bottom of her hoop skirt, and a gentleman might have set his coat down for her to walk on. Today we’re more likely to use verbs like drench or soil instead, and, for the most part, to wear more sensible clothes.”

Example:
“During inclement spring days, the foot traffic of one open house can easily bedragglethe listing’s foyer.”
