Recognizing a “Culture of Fear”

Image of man in fearHere’s a great read we came across this week on recognizing a professional “culture of fear.” The culture of an organization — be it a tech company or a dynamic real estate team — can be contaminated when leadership and organizational behaviors show evidence of a fear-dominated environment.

Tim Kuppler of CultureUniversity.com recently put together an excellent article for TLNT Magazine (that’s pronounced “talent” magazine), a hub dedicated to human resources. In his article, “The 8 Clear Signs of a Workplace Culture of Fear” he sheds light on evidence of a dysfunctional culture, including when:

1. Bad behavior is not visibly confronted.
2. Compensation, incentives and/or promotions are based on results, not results AND behavior.
3. “Explosions” are evident periodically from one or more top leaders.
4. Pre-meetings are the norm.
5. Communication is poor or one-way.
6. Email is used to cover your rear or is not proactively used.
7. A general lack of clarity and alignment about managing work.
8. Values and expected behaviors are not specifically defined and reinforced.

For a detailed look at each of these signs, we encourage you to read Tim’s piece. If you have plans to run a major real estate office, or wish the one in which you worked was more productive and had a positive culture, check this article out today:
