The Closing Word: Intransigent

Image of Closing Word LogoThis week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.

This week’s closing word:

intransigent

Pronounced: (in-TRANS-ih-junt)

Adjective:
Unwilling to compromise, especially from an extreme position.

Noun:
One who refuses to compromise.

A nice shade of meaning in intransigent is the idea that the inflexible person occupies an extreme position of resistance. They are considered an “immovable object” in the compromise, which is fitting, given that the “in” prefix means “not” and “trans” describes movement.

Example:
“The developer was intransigent about the request he presere some of the property for a nature conservancy, insisting he needed to put housing on every possible parcel.”
