Image of Closing Word LogoThis week we continue our vocabulary-building series, “The Closing Word.” Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.

This week’s closing word:

mercurial

Pronounced: (mur-CURE-ee-uhl)

Adjective:
1. liable to sudden unpredictable change
2. clever, lively, or quick

Though mercurial is often used to describe someone’s tendency to anger, it doesn’t have to be so narrowly utilized. According to Vocabulary.com, “A mercurial personality has the unpredictability associated with the god Mercury or, in astrology, is supposedly influenced by the planet.”

Examples:
“Experience has taught me how to provide sound counsel to the shifting interests of mercurial home shoppers.”

“Discovery of dieldrin pesticide in the water supply destroyed property values, showing just how mercuriala market can be when it comes to environmental issues.”
