Want Focus? Add a Little Noise

Simply NoiseWe live in a noisy world. One-sided cell phone conversations, construction, traffic, office chit-chat… it can all add up to a cacophony of distraction that prevents you from focusing on your work.

One little tool we’ve been using around the office to sharpen our focus is “Simply Noise.” With a pair of headphones and this free website, you can generate forms of soothing “noise” that block out the distractions around you:

The idea is simple: You select a type of noise (white, pink, or brown), set the volume, and tune out. Other options include setting the “oscillation” (fading the volume level up and down at variable speed) and a sleep timer, to turn off the noise after a set period of time.

You’d be surprised how effective it is at lulling you into a trance. It’s almost like having the ocean waves in your office.
