Scott’s Thoughts: A Little Encouragement

“Most of us, swimming against the tides of trouble the world knows nothing about, need only a bit of praise or encouragement – and we will make the goal”

Jerome P. Fleishman, businessman & motivational speaker

It’s one way we check-in and take stock of how we’re doing. Most of the time, people are very supportive. Sometimes they even have helpful feedback, which helps us make the newsletter more useful for everyone.

I often share letters from agents with our team. This includes the writers and designers as well as many of Oakley’s front-line sales and client service reps. The kind words travel through the company, reminding us that even in the world of information-overload and jam-packed email inboxes, our little contribution can make a difference in people’s day.

We don’t have a real sense what the lives of others are like. We cannot know, first-hand, what their individual struggles and stresses are. Sometimes the most off-hand kind remark can be exactly what someone needs to help them stay afloat on the tides of their troubles.

I would encourage you this week to look for opportunities to share a little encouragement with those you encounter on a regular basis. You probably have tremendous appreciation for a wide range of people– a barista, an office assistant, a clerk at a local flower shop– but it may have been a while since you’ve pushed a little praise their direction.

Like last week, when we encouraged you to think of your legacy, I propose you write the word “APPRECIATE” on a Post-It note and stick it somewhere you’re bound to see it every day (like the coffee pot). Spend five genuine remarks each day on those around you. You never know when it might arrive just in time.
